ADAM AVIKAINEN

CSI:DNR

19 maggio – 10 luglio 2015

ADAM AVIKAINEN

CSI:DNRO

May 19th – July 10th 2015

Monitor is pleased to present the third solo exhibition by American artist Adam Avikainen in the gallery entitled CSI:DNR: Rome, a further stage and evolution of the project presented last October by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin).

His artistic production could be seen as a constantly spinning triangle with photography, painting and cinema on each corner. The installation presented in occasion of the show consists painted canvas on a large scale and a site-specific work with projections of 333 photographic images and letters.

CSI references the American crime drama TV series Crime Scene Investigation, the second part of the title, Department of Natural Resources , articulates the field of interest the artist is engaging in. Part of his work consists in fact in collecting evidence, scientific and sociological data, and connecting dots in time and space.

Adam Avikainen works primarily with installations that make use of different materials combined with his writings – as if they were stories that unfold between idiosyncratic observations and scientific findings, calculations and projective stories, often told by objects or things.

Avikainen draws us well in scenarios that are based on forecasts at the same time rational and imaginary universes. A background current that runs through all his work is the downsizing of human perception and self-perception in relation to both the micro and macrocosm of nature and geology, situating our body and our mind in the continuum of the all-encompassing nature.

In CSI:DNR, all of nature becomes a crime scene in an ongoing story that subsumes all the elements of his life in an extended artistic process.

Investigating on the role of natural sciences in our present, the artist behaves as a “medium” and detective, using painting as praxis and expanding scientific methods and theories in a poetic way to a continuous narrative exploration.

The large-scale paintings, realized employing natural pigments and inspired by the places and the atmosphere, where they’ve been conceived, assume the identity of organic beings.

The site specific installation is composed by 333 letters and the projection of 333 photos and posters he has been gathering in the past months. 333 is not arbitrary, Adam claims it is his lucky number and it references the moment when as a kid he became aware of time.
