Rä Di Martino

Rä Di Martino – Solo show

(Italian text below)

Rä Di Martino carries her research along a thin line of demarcation. Elements of film tout court are clearly visible in her work in unmistakable features such as her intuitive use of the camera, the precision of her takes and the sophisticated research of her photography.

Born in 1975 in Rome, Di Martino has been living and working in London since 1997. She makes use of these elements to uproot convention, thereby destroying the accepted code of rules and replacing them with a new logic and different meanings. The element of disorientation and the impossibility of coherent or rational actions in fact affect the behaviour of the characters and particularly the artistic direction of the work.
In not360 (2002), the quiet English countryside is upset by a series of gauche, unusual protagonists acting out a scene on the verge of the surreal. While in between (2001) it is the absurd questions posed by the protagonist, trapped and misunderstood in a desolate and sun-drenched Rome, that baffle the observer.
So if the absurd can invade every day life, why shouldn’t it extend to American film icons?
In fact, in a 1920s version of Rambo -untitled (rambo), 2003-, the legendary apotheosis of the american way of life grapples with a sequence of failed rescue attempts.

Rä Di Martino – Solo show
