Il pittore americano Ian Tweedy (Hann 1982) torna finalmente a Roma, dopo diversi anni di assenza, con un prezioso nucleo di opere inedite appositamente realizzate per la mostra personale dal titolo My Wall.
La varietà di tecniche che hanno caratterizzato la produzione giovanile dell’artista, con lavori che delineavano un percorso tra diversi media, dal graffito alla scultura, dalla fotografia al disegno, lascia ora spazio ad uno scarto ulteriore nella sua ricerca, con la concezione di una mostra di pura pittura. Anche nella scelta dei temi, c’è un ulteriore passaggio di testimone: la commistione tra il semplice reportage di fatti storici e la sua personale interpretazione, lascia il passo ad un nuova modalità di raccontare e rappresentare i fatti, il tempo e lo spazio.
L’aspirazione di Ian Tweedy alla costruzione di una nuova mitologia legata alla storia europea e americana, il concetto di appropriazione -ma anche di trascrizione della storia passata e recente- si incontrano ora con una visione più ampia della realtà e della propria esperienza di vita, generando uno scarto dell’immaginazione che ci parla con un linguaggio nuovo.
Il costante e intenso lavoro di raccolta e archiviazione di immagini resta un punto centrale nella ricerca Tweedy, ma a questo si aggiunge la costruzione di una biografia più intima, di un’ identità più definita, di un racconto stratificato che si presta a diverse letture. E’ la costruzione di un nuovo dialogo quello che l’artista instaura con il medium della pittura, con il processo di composizione dell’immagine e con i soggetti della rappresentazione. Ad esempio, il paesaggio urbano protagonista dei lavori precedenti viene oggi quasi completamente sostituito da quello naturale.
La natura, colta nel suo processo rigenerante, si configura nelle recenti opere pittoriche di Tweedy, come un elemento costante nel suo divenire attraverso le stagioni e nella sua relazione con l’uomo: esso viene da lei rapito, catturato e ritratto quasi sempre di spalle nell’atto di immergersi nello sfondo del dipinto, come se ci fosse una ulteriore profondità, una terza dimensione da esplorare.
L’artista si misura con la tela come se si cimentasse in una rappresentazione teatrale, portando gradualmente sulla scena gli elementi che vanno a comporre il senso della narrazione e della rappresentazione. Dallo sfondo affiorano elementi che rivelano solo alla fine il vero intento della composizione finale. Protagonista è la luce, dinamica e diffusa che avvolge i soggetti ritratti e il colore che si sparge a macchia, fuoriuscendo dai contorni dal disegno.
Indagando a fondo la relazione personale che ha sviluppato nel corso degli anni con la pittura figurativa ma ancor di più con la sua personale concezione di astrattismo, con My Wall, Tweedy effettua una intensa ricognizione della sua storia di pittore, gettando le basi per le infinite possibilità future.

Monitor is delighted to present American painter Ian Tweedy’s first solo show at the gallery after several years of absence, featuring a new group of work entirely conceived for MY WALL solo show.
Tweedy’s early work, which was characterized by the use of a variety of media including graffiti, sculpture, photography and drawing, has given way to an evolution in his research, resulting in a unadulterated painting exhibition. The artist’s subject matter, too, has expanded: the coupling of straightforward reporting of historical facts with a personal interpretation now gives way to new methods of narration and representation of facts, time and space.
Tweedy’s aspiration for the construction of a new mythology based on European and American history, together with the concept of appropriation and the recording of past and recent history is now intertwined with a broader vision of reality and personal experience, creating a furthering of imagination which speaks to us in a new language.
The constant and intense labour of collecting and archiving images remains central to Tweedy’s work, but is now compounded by the creation of a more intimate biography, a more defined identity and a multi-layered story open to a number of interpretations. The artist has here embarked on a new dialogue with the medium of painting, its subject matter, and the process of composing an image.The urban landscape of his previous works becomes almost entirely substituted by a natural one.
Nature, depicted in its regenerating process, has become central to Tweedy’s recent work: it is a constant element with its perpetual seasons and its relation to man, who, portrayed almost always from behind as though diving into the background, is captured by nature, creating a seemingly third dimension or additional depth to explore.
Tweedy engages with the canvas as if he were dabbling in a theatrical representation, gradually bringing onto the set elements which go on to compose the direction of the narration and representation. The true intent of the composition is revealed only towards the end as the elements surface from the background. A key role is played by light, which envelopes the subject matter with its dynamism, as well as color, which spreads and bleeds beyond the borders of the painting.
Through a profound exploration of his personal relationship with figurative painting over the years, compounded by his personal conception of abstraction, with TITLE Tweedy achieves an deep understanding of his own history as a painter, laying the foundation for a future of infinite possibilities.
