Alexandre Singh – Assembly Instructions: The Pledge

Monitor is proud to present the latest project by Alexandre Singh, at his second solo show in our premises after The Marque of the Third Stripe exhibition in May 2008.
“Assembly Instructions: The Pledge” is the second part of Alexandre Singh’s solo exhibition which first took place in September 2011 at art: concept (Paris). On the occasion of his new exhibition at Monitor, Singh presents three Assembly Instructions. This series, which the artist has been working on since 2008, forms part of a large and variegated practice that includes performances, lectures, installations, radio, and theatre plays.
The three wall diagrams displayed in the gallery operate as proxy-portraits for Simon Fujiwara (artist), Alfredo Arias (playwright, director and actor) and Marc-Olivier Wahler (curator and director, Palais de Tokyo, Paris). Singh has developed these new Assembly Instructions from a series of interviews he conducted with each of his subjects that were subsequently re-edited and fictionalised through the liberal addition of stage-directions, narrative fragments and visual re-imaginings. These dialogues, of a highly fantastical nature, are together with the collages from the Assembly Instructions the basis of Singh’s ‘carte-blanche’ intervention in the September 2011 issue of Palais magazine.
Through the reassembling and manipulation of the facts, personal opinions and potential imagery evoked by each interview, Singh’s diagrams create something beyond the simple illustration of reality. Drawing his inspiration from platonic philosophy, ancient theatre and the conversational model of mass-media, the artist attempts to bring the interviewees ideas to life by giving them shape in a novel and visually enchanting form.
The compositional elements and rules that govern the display of images in the Assembly Instructions is characteristic of Singh’s work in general. Each arrangement suggesting a variety of possible interpretations, like a multiple choice questionnaire in which the fictions and visual relationships of the different elements are either shown explicitly or open to suggestion. Though the collages are all concretely linked together through the use of simple graphic lines, the lines themselves reveal little as to the possible relationships between any two images. These same pencil lines that connect each frame; constantly crossing and splitting off; never suggest any hierarchy or method of classification. In each diagram, the individual collage acts like a knot or junction from which different thought patterns and visual pathways emanate. These processes of connection share as much an affinity with the surrealists’ methods of automatic-writing as they do with the daily wanderings of the contemporary flâneur as he journeys upon the world wide web.”

La galleria Monitor è orgogliosa di presentare la seconda personale di Alexandre Singh nei propri spazi, a distanza di quattro anni dalla splendida The Marque of The Third Stripe (Maggio 2008).
“Assembly Instructions: The Pledge” è la seconda parte della mostra personale di Alexandre Singh che ha visto la sua prima tappa a settembre 2011 nella galleria art:concept a Parigi. In occasione della mostra presso Monitor, l’artista presenterà tre Assembly Instructions. Questa serie di lavori, che appartengono alla pratica dell’artista già dal 2008, comprende una più ampia gamma di interazioni con altri media come performance, conferenze, installazioni, radio e spettacoli teatrali.
I tre grandi diagrammi murali disposti negli spazi della galleria costituiscono una sorta di ritratto rispettivamente di Simon Fujiwara (artista), Alfredo Arias (commediografo, regista e attore) e Marc-Olivier Wahler (direttore del Palais de Tokyo di Parigi).
Singh sviluppa queste nuove Assembly Instructions partendo da una serie di interviste condotte dall’artista stesso con ciascuno dei tre personaggi, interviste che sono poi state rieditate e romanzate attraverso l’aggiunta arbitraria di vere e proprie stage-directions, frammenti di narrazione e reinterpretazioni visive.
Questi dialoghi, di natura fortemente immaginifica sono – insieme con i collage delle Assembly Instructions – alla base dell’intervento ‘carte-blanche’ che Singh ha realizzato per il numero di Settembre 2011 del Magazine Palais, edito dal Palais de Tokyo. Attraverso il riassemblaggio e la manipolazione dei fatti, delle opinioni personali e del potenziale immaginario evocato da ciascuna intervista, i diagrammi di Singh sviluppano qualcosa che va oltre la semplice illustrazione della realtà.
Traendo ispirazione da diverse fonti, quali la filosofia Platonica, il teatro delle origini ma anche i popolari talk show televisivi, l’artista cerca di far rivivere le idee dei personaggi intervistati conferendo loro una insolita e ammaliante formalizzazione visiva. Gli elementi compositivi e le regole che governano la disposizione delle immagini nelle Assembly Instructions sono una caratteristca ricorrente in tutto il lavoro di Singh. Ciascuna disposizione degli elementi che le compongono suggerisce molteplici e possibili interpretazioni, come un questionario a risposta multipla nel quale la finzione e le relazioni visive dei diversi elementi sono mostrati esplicitamente oppure aperti a nuove suggestioni. Sebbene i collage che compongono le Assembly Instructions siano tutti legati dalla traccia di semplici linee grafiche, queste rivelano solamente una piccola parte della relazione tra due o più immagini.
Le linee tracciate a matita direttamente sul muro, pur mettendo in relazione ciascuna cornice, incrociandosi e dividendosi continuamente, non suggeriscono mai una gerarchia o un metodo di classificazione. In ciascun diagramma, ogni singolo collage funziona come un nodo o una giunzione da cui si irradiano diversi percorsi di pensiero e sentieri visivi. Questi processi di connessione rivelano molte affinità con il metodo surrealista della ‘scrittura automatica’ come peregrinazioni di un flâneur contemporaneo all’interno del vasto mondo del web.”
