In occasione della sua seconda mostra personale a MONITOR, Benedikt Hipp presenta una serie di lavori pensati per gli spazi della galleria, sviluppando una inedita sinergia tra i suoi lavori pittorici e la componente installativa di un corpo di sculture realizzate in collaborazione con l’artista Lisa Reitmeier.
Abisso Calipso, questo il titolo evocativo della mostra che si ispira alla profondità del mare, segue un percorso orchestrato tra più elementi per mettere in relazione, attraverso riflessioni scientifiche, ambientali e sociali, le diverse opere presenti nelle due stanze della galleria.
Mentre la stanza di sinistra è dedicata all’interpretazione dell’origine stessa della vita, in cui scultura e pittura si fondono nel grande lavoro installativo “Geological Heartbeat” quella di destra ci proietta nel mondo odierno, con opere che trovano i loro riferimenti nelle utopie del modernismo, nella questione delle leggi della tassonomia e più in generale nella riflessione sulla condizione umana.
La ricerca pittorica di Hipp eludendo la distinzione tra astratto e figurativo, è anche in questo caso influenzata dalle figure misteriose ed ataviche, evocazione dei millenari ex voto che da sempre fanno parte della ricerca dell’artista e del suo storico personale, palesandosi nelle forme antropomorfe presenti in alcuni dipinti e negli oggetti che ricordano in alcuni casi altari sacrificali ed offerte votive.
Ciò che ne scaturisce è un’opera corale che vuole rappresentare l’origine della vita naturale, ma anche i processi di trasformazione e di proliferazione di altre forme di vita. Al centro di tutto, l’uomo (l’anthropos) fautore delle sue progressive sorti ma anche della sua ineluttabile rovina.
La mostra è accompagnata da un testo critico di Laura Amann.

On the occasion of his second solo show at MONITOR, the Amsterdam/Munich-based artist Benedikt Hipp will present a series of new works thought out for the gallery’s spaces, creating a new synergy between his pictorial pieces and the installation aspect of a body of sculptures realised in collaboration with the artist Lisa Reitmeier.
Abisso Calipso, the evocative title of the show inspired by the deepest submarine territory in Mediterranean sea, seeks to create a dialogue between the works in the two spaces of the gallery through scientific, environmental and social reflections, together with an orchestrated grouping of elements.
While the left gallery is dedicated to the interpretation of the origin of life itself, where sculpture and painting come together in the large immersive installation ‘Geological Heartbeat’, the gallery to the right propels us to the present day where the works reference modernist utopias, questioning laws of taxonomy, and a reflection on human condition.
Hipp’s work eludes the distinction between the abstract and figurative and is often influenced by mysterious and atavistic votive figures, invariably present in his artistic research and personal history. Here they are revealed by the anthropomorphic figures present in several paintings and in objects which recall sacrificial altars and votive offerings.
What emerges is a multi-layered oeuvre which seeks to represent the origins of natural life, but also the processes of transformation and proliferation of other forms of life. At the centre of everything, man (the anthropos) is the source of his progressive destiny but also of his inescapable downfall.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a text by Laura Amann.
