La galleria Monitor è orgogliosa di presentare per la prima volta in Italia le personali di due artisti portoghesi, frutto di una investigazione sul territorio svolta negli ultimi anni e coincidente con l’insediamento di Monitor a Lisbona nel 2017.

Daniel V. Melim ed Eugénia Mussa prenderanno possesso rispettivamente delle due stanze della galleria con due mostre diversissime ma in un qualche modo complementari.

La loro ricerca rappresenta due anime del Portogallo, apparentemente dissimili ma profondamente unite. L’autobiografismo potrebbe essere un comune denominatore per entrambi questi artisti, appartenenti alla stessa generazione. Se per Daniel V. Melim la sua isola natale, Madeira, è presente nella tradizione di piccoli manufatti di natura popolare ed oggetti appartenenti ad un passato quasi mitologico, per Eugénia Mussa le origini mozambicane fanno spesso da contraltare ad una ricerca per immagini che si inserisce in un passato sospeso tra due continenti.

broken temple, unbreakable spirit è il titolo scelto per la sua mostra da V. Melim che inizia un toccante testo scritto di suo pugno con questa frase, lapidaria nella sua ironia: “La cattiva notizia è che stai cadendo in aria, niente a cui aggrapparsi, niente paracadute. La buona notizia è che non c’è suolo” [Chögyam Trungpa]. Lo spazio tra le opere è il luogo in cui si svolge la vera mostra. Leonard Cohen ha cantato che c’é “una crepa in tutto, ed è lì che entra la luce”. Se canti di una caduta, dentro di te sorge qualcosa di più sostanziale. Non importa quanto avidi o egoistici siano i nostri obiettivi di vita, c’è sempre un momento in cui questi templi illusi che abbiamo eretto cedono alla gravità. In un momento del genere, se siamo abbastanza stanchi, qualcosa di sacro alla fine può sorgere e prendere possesso del momento. Alla fine. “Gravità e grazia”. DVM.

Easy Peasy. Un titolo che ammicca e seduce, che invoglia e non svela.
Un po’ come la pittura di Eugénia Mussa, artista mozambicana per nascita e lisbonese per vita e per scelta. Per la sua prima mostra personale negli spazi di Monitor Roma l’artista ha deciso di realizzare un corpo di lavori denso di significati e ristretto nel numero: solo pochi dipinti su carta a far l’ingresso in una delle sale della galleria. “La pittura è tutto – dice la Mussa in una recente chiacchierata telefonica- e per me è decisamente fondamentale il piacere che provo nel dipingere un soggetto, una situazione, un’atmosfera. Quando osservo un’immagine – che naturalmente subirà dei significativi cambiamenti in corso d’opera- mi interrogo già su quanto mi divertirò a realizzarla. Se li osservi bene, in questi dipinti non accade proprio nulla. Restituiscono unicamente il piacere della pittura stessa.” EM

Monitor Gallery is proud to present solo shows by two Portuguese artists making their Italian debuts, encountered during explorations carried out in that country in recent years in conjunction with the opening of Monitor Lisbon in 2017.

Daniel V. Melim and Eugénia Mussa will each take possession of a different room in the gallery, with two very different but in some sense complementary exhibitions.

Their artistic work represents two souls of Portugal that are apparently dissimilar, but actually profoundly linked. An autobiographical tendency may be a common denominator for these two artists, who are also of the same generation. While Daniel V. Melim’s island birthplace, Madeira, is reflected in his work in terms of traditional small handcrafts and objects from an almost mythological past, Eugenia Mussa’s Mozambiquan origins often counterbalance her experimentation with images that seem drawn from a past suspended between two continents.

broken temple, unbreakable spirit is the title chosen for his exhibition by V. Melim, who opens a moving handwritten statement with this scathingly ironic phrase: “The bad news is you’re falling through the air, nothing to hang on to, no parachute. The good news is, there’s no ground.”  [ChögyamTrungpaThe space in between the pieces is where the true exhibition takes place. Leonard Cohen sang of there being “a crack in everything, that is where the light gets in”. If you sing about a falling, something more substantial rises within. No matter how greedy or selfish our life goals are, there is always a moment where these deluded temples we erected give into gravity. In such a moment, if we are tired enough, something sacred can eventually rise and take hold of the moment. Eventually. “Gravity and Grace”. DVM.

Easy Peasy. A title that’s allusive and seductive, that teases, revealing nothing.
A bit like the paintings of artist Eugénia Mussa, Mozambiquan by birth and Lisboeta by choice. For her first solo show at Monitor Rome, she decided to create a limited number of works – just a few paintings on paper on view at the entrance to one of the gallery’s rooms – but densely packed with meaning. “Painting is everything” Mussa told me in a recent phone call, “and for me, the pleasure I get from painting a subject, a situation or an atmosphere is definitely fundamental. When I observe an image – which will naturally go through significant changes as the work progresses -, I’m already thinking about how much fun I’ll have painting it. If you look closely, there’s absolutely nothing happening in these paintings. All you get is the pleasure of the painting itself.” EM
