PEQUENAS NOTAS SOBRE FIGURAÇÃO : EUGÉNIA MUSSA, DANIEL V. MELIM E THOMAS BRAIDA

A Monitor Lisbon tem o prazer de anunciar Pequenas notas sobre figuração: Eugénia Mussa, Daniel V. Melim e Thomas Braida, uma exposição coletiva focada na pintura figurativa que coloca em diálogo as práticas de três jovens artistas. Esta seleção de pintores faz parte de uma pesquisa de longo prazo da galeria sobre pintura figurativa, através da prática de jovens artistas que são capazes de oferecer uma reinterpretação pessoal e contemporânea da longa tradição deste meio.

Eugénia Mussa nasceu em 1978 em Maputo, mas mudou-se para Lisboa muito jovem. Na sua obra figurativa, a artista emprega uma técnica clássica de pintura a óleo com uma aleatoriedade musical, flutuando livremente entre estilos, géneros ou paradigmas pré-estabelecidos. As imagens presentes nas pinturas de Mussa provêm de uma ampla variedade de referências: desde a sua própria experiência de pedestre na cidade de Lisboa até fotos colecionadas de revistas, livros e cartões postais. Outra fonte frequente de inspiração para as suas pinturas são stills de vídeos gravados em película Kodachrome encontrados no Youtube. Todas essas imagens diferentes, independentemente da sua proveniência, partilham a capacidade de evocar um sentimento de simplicidade alinhada, leveza e alegria. Elas representam lembranças individuais ou partilhadas, que nos deixam um sentimento de nostalgia agridoce, uma forma de agradável melancolia pelo passado que impregna essas memórias e que consegue entrar na tela sob a forma de muitas camadas de cores exuberantes e fluorescentes, que, permeando o fundo das obras e as figuras, permitem uma transposição visível na pintura do sentimento que faz essas memórias vivas e preciosas.

Daniel V.Melim nasceu em 1982 na Madeira e vive em Lisboa. Melim é um artista poliédro, que nunca se sentiu satisfeito ao canalizar a sua criatividade numa única disciplina; de fato, ao longo da sua carreira, o artista explorou diferentes formas de arte: música, performance e pintura, entre outras. As duas obras presentes na galeria faziam parte de um altar site-specific, criado pelo artista durante a sua residência na Ano Zero, Segunda Bienal de Coimbra de 2019. O altar era composto por várias pinturas a óleo sobre madeira, exibidas numa estrutura do mesmo material. Entre as figuras que habitavam este altar haviam camponeses, crianças, idosos, plantas sagradas e esqueletos, dispostos em torno dos dois eixos do altar de acordo com as suas cargas simbólicas, formando uma narrativa complexa que reconhecia a existência na vida de forças aparentemente opostas e exortava pela sua conciliação necessária.

Thomas Braida nasceu em 1982, em Gorizia, Itália e  vive em Veneza há muitos anos. Quando era criança, ele foi influenciado pelo seu pai, professor de história da arte e artista, mas acima de tudo pelos romances de aventura de Emilio Salgari, como ele lembra: “Ele despertou a minha imaginação. Isso então degenerou na pintura. O que estava à minha frente nunca foi suficiente: eu sempre vislumbrei a realidade, tornando-a mais apetitosa ”. De fato, o conteúdo da sua obra figurativa contém muitas referências a fábulas, mitos e elementos fantásticos que combinam sentimentalismo e atmosferas grotescas. As duas pinturas selecionadas para esta exposição, apesar de não apresentarem criaturas antropomórficas que caracterizam o seu trabalho, elas estão de alguma forma incorporadas na mesma névoa enigmática que desfoca a perspectiva do espectador e transmite uma expectativa sensorial de uma ambiguidade indecifrável.

A exposição Pequenas notas sobre figuração: Eugénia Mussa, Daniel V.Melim e Thomas Braida, mostrando os trabalhos de três pintores figurativos contemporâneos, visa apresentar diferentes abordagens técnicas e temáticas que representam apenas uma porção infinitesimal das possibilidades inesgotáveis ​​que a pintura figurativa ainda permite.

Monitor Lisbon is pleased to announce Pequenas notas sobre figuração : Eugénia Mussa, Daniel V. Melim and Thomas Braida, a group show focused on contemporary figurative painting, that brings into dialogue the practice of three young artists. This selection of painters is part of a long-term research of the gallery on figurative painting through the practice of  artists who are able to offer a personal and contemporary re-interpretation of the long standing tradition of this medium.

Eugénia Mussa was born in 1978 in Maputo, but moved to Lisbon at a very young age. In her figurative work the artist employs a classical technique of oil painting with a musical randomness, floating between styles, genres or pre-established paradigms. The imagery present in Mussa’s paintings come from a wide variety of references : from her pedestrian experience of the city of Lisbon, to collected pictures in magazines, books and postcards. Another frequent source of inspiration for her works are stills from homemade Kodachrome videos found on Youtube. All these different images, regardless from their provenance, share the ability to evoke a feeling of aligned simplicity, lightheartedness and joy. They represent individual and shared memories that are gone and leave a sense of bittersweet melancholy, a form of pleasant nostalgia that manages to enter the canvas in the form many layers of exuberant and fluorescent colors, that by permeating the background of the works, allow for a visible transposition in the painting of the exact feeling that makes these memories alive and precious.

Daniel V.Melim was born in 1982 in Madeira, he lives and works in Lisbon. Melim is a polyhedric artist, one that has never felt content in channelling his creativity in a single discipline, in fact, throughout his career, the artist has explored different forms of art : music, performance and painting among others. His two paintings present in the gallery, were part of a site-specific altar, created by the artist during his residency at the Second Biennial of Coimbra 2019. This altar was composed by several oil paintings on old found wood displayed in a structure of the same material. Among the figures that inhabited this altar there were peasants, children, old people, sacred plants and skeletons, which were arranged along the two axis of the altar according to their symbolic charges, forming a complex narrative that acknowledged the existence of opposing forces in life and praised for their necessary conciliation.

Thomas Braida was born in 1982 in Gorizia, Italy. He is an Italian figurative painter based in Venice. As a child he was influenced by his father, an art teacher and artist, but above all by Emilio Salgari’s adventure novels, as he recalls : ” He sparked my imagination. That then degenerated into painting. What was in front of me was never enough: I always pimped reality to make it more appetizing”. In fact, the content of his figurative work borrows many elements and moods from fairy tales, fantasy and mythology, that combine sentimentality and grotesqueness in a very startling way. The two works selected for this show, even though they they do not present the fable like anthropomorphic creatures that characterize his work, they are somehow embedded in the same enigmatic haze that blurs the viewer’s perspective and transmits a sense of of expectancy and indecipherable ambiguity.

The exhibition Pequenas notas sobre figuração : Eugénia Mussa, Daniel V. Melim and Thomas Braida, by showing the works of three contemporary figurative painters, aims at presenting different technical and thematic approaches that represent only an infinitesimal portion of the inexhaustible possibilities that figurative painting still allows.
