The Centre Cannot Hold si pone come un tentativo di esplorare parzialmente il vasto panorama dell’arte contemporanea portoghese attraverso il lavoro di undici artisti ed artiste i cui approcci innovativi sfidano le convenzioni e le definizioni tradizionali. Il titolo della mostra – preso in prestito da un verso della poesia “The Second Coming” di William Butler Yeats – allude al senso di disordine e frammentazione nella società contemporanea, con l’impossibilità di trovare significati e narrazioni unificanti, e al contempo, serve da metafora per la molteplicità di voci e prospettive presenti in questa collettiva.
L’idea di un centro incapace di adempiere al proprio ruolo aggregatore incapsula sia il tema della mostra che l’approccio che ha guidato la selezione delle opere presenti. In questo senso, The Centre Cannot Hold intende presentare una prospettiva ampia sul contesto artistico portoghese, esponendo un gruppo deliberatamente eclettico di artisti ed artiste provenienti da generazioni diverse e che operano attraverso una vasta gamma di mezzi espressivi. Invece di cercare di forzare un’identità nazionale, identificare tendenze stilistiche o affinità tematiche, l’intento è di presentare opere che condividono un interesse nell’uso di materiali, tecniche, soggetti e ispirazioni non convenzionali, oltre ad essere unite da un comune desiderio di mettere in discussione significati univoci, prospettive dominanti e altre forze unificanti. Presentando queste pratiche divergenti ed atopiche, la mostra si propone di ridefinire un “centro” evidenziando alcune delle voci che si allontanano da esso e affermano, nello spirito di Roland Barthes, “il loro diritto sovrano di deviare dalla rotta” come un aspetto fondamentale delle loro esplorazioni artistiche.

The Centre Cannot Hold is conceived as an attempt to partially explore the vast panorama of Portuguese contemporary art through the work of eleven artists whose innovative approaches and diverse expressions challenge traditional conventions and definitions. The title of the exhibition – borrowed from a verse in William Butler Yeats’ poem “The Second Coming”- alludes to the sense of disarray and fragmentation within contemporary society, with the impossibility to find unifying meanings and narratives, while it also serves as a metaphor for the multiplicity of voices and perspectives present in this exhibition.
The idea of a center unable to fulfill its role as an aggregator suggested by the exhibition’s title, encapsulates both the (anti)theme of the show and the approach that guided the selection of the artists and artworks featured. In this sense, The Centre Cannot Hold intends to present a diverse perspective on the national artistic context by showcasing a deliberately eclectic group of artists from different generations and who work across a wide array of mediums. Instead of trying to propose a singular national identity, identify stylistic trends, or thematic affinities, the exhibition aims to present works who share an interest in the use of unconventional materials, techniques, subjects and inspirations, alongside a common desire to challenge singular meanings, dominant perspectives and other unifying forces. By presenting these varied, divergent, and atopical practices, the show aims to redefine a “center” by highlighting some of the practices that stray from it and claim, in the spirit of Roland Barthes, “their sovereign right to wander off the point” as a fundamental aspect of their artistic explorations.
