Monitor is pleased to announce the opening of the solo shows dedicated to Rä di Martino and Adam Avikainen at its new premises in Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, with two new projects developed by the artists over the past year.
After The Dancing Kid, presented in 2005, Rä di Martino returns to Monitor with her latest project conceived from the study of ancient oral traditions and completed with the support of Genk’s FLACC.
Shot in a fin de siècle villa in the Belgian countryside, August 2008 features a stunning Maya Sansa alongside Mauro Remiddi (who also composed the film’s soundtrack together with the artist), singing CNN news stories from August 2008, from the evacuation of New Orleans to the melting of the North Pole ice caps. Frozen within the stylistic evocation of a 1940s film, the two actors deliver familiar TV reports in a new, lyrical key that empties them of their inherent pathos.
The show of works by Adam Avikainen is the first exhibition in which Monitor features exclusively paintings by the artist. Following a period of living in Japan, Avikainen returns to Rome with a cycle of some thirty paintings of various sizes, structured according to the artist’s customary fashion of creating a kind of storyboard for a work of fiction and narrated by Avikainen’s own voice in a ‘radio drama’ lasting around eighty minutes.
From the Casino, a topical place in the artist’s imagination, to the cherry trees in blossom through the streets, the citrus and lemon trees near his studio by the river in the town of Kamiyama – all these elements emerge in Avikainen’s painting.
Each painting has a corresponding photograph, taken by the artist during his months spent in Japan – at times the significance is blatant, at times less so. It is the viewer’s job to go about deciphering the works, as the scent of chocolate and cinnamon brownie permeates the air.

La galleria Monitor è orgogliosa di annunciare le personali di Rä di Martino ed Adam Avikainen nei nuovi spazi di Palazzo Sforza Cesarini con due progetti inediti sviluppati nell’arco dell’ultimo anno.
Dopo The Dancing Kid, presentato nel 2005, Rä di Martino torna ad esporre alla galleria Monitor il suo ultimo lavoro nato dallo studio delle antiche tradizioni orali e realizzato grazie al supporto del FLACC di Genk.
“August 2008” girato in una villa fin de siecle immersa nella campagna belga, vede infatti una splendida Maya Sansa e Mauro Remiddi (coautore insieme all’artista della musica del film), cantare le news di Agosto del 2008 passate alla BBC, dall’evacuazione di New Orleans allo scioglimento dei ghiacci nel Polo Nord. I due attori come in un tableau vivant, raggelati nell’immobilità da remake di un film anni ’40, ri-presentano le stesse notizie comunemente ascoltate in TV, ma trasformandole quasi in un qualcosa di lirico e astratto, svuotandole del loro pathos.
Quella di Adam Avikainen è invece la prima mostra della galleria Monitor esclusivamente dedicata alla pittura. Dopo un periodo di residenza in Giappone, Avikainen torna ad esporre nella capitale con un ciclo di circa trenta dipinti di varie dimensioni, strutturati secondo una prassi ormai consona all’artista, come un vero e proprio story board di un’opera di fiction, narrata dalla voce dello stesso artista in un “radio drama” di circa ottanta minuti.
Il Casino, luogo topico dell’immaginario di Avikainen, i ciliegi in fiore nelle strade delle città nipponiche, gli alberi di cedri e di limoni nei pressi del suo studio nella cittadina di Kamiyama tutto questo traspare dalla pittura di Avikainen.
Ogni dipinto è legato ad una foto corrispondente, scattata dall’artista nei mesi di residenza in Giappone: il significato è a volte palese, talvolta ostico. All’osservatore il compito di scoprirlo, mentre il profumo di un brownie al cioccolato e zenzero si diffonde nell’aria.
