Magma è la terza esposizione di Benedikt Hipp nel headquarter romano della galleria Monitor e avviene a distanza di ben sei anni dalla mostra Abisso Calypso inaugurata nel 2018.

L’artista tedesco, particolarmente legato alla città di Roma grazie anche alla sua permanenza in città come borsista presso Accademia Tedesca Villa Massimo nell’anno 2020-21, inaugura nella sede di San Lorenzo il 2 Dicembre.

“Magma (μάγμα mágma, impasto) è una parola greca che tutti conoscono e significa: sistema complesso di roccia fusa.

Il magma, cioè la roccia fusa ha una temperatura tra 1000°-1300°C, che poi sarebbe la temperatura con cui lavoro anche io nella fornace, il “campo di temperature” in cui la materia inizia di fondere.
É la fusione, lo stato fluido, in cui i confini stanno iniziando a sfumare, a diventare qualcos’altro.
Una trasformazione sistemica per cui iniziano a crearsi nuovi ordini, organizzazioni, essenze emergenti. Con questo voglio invitare ad espandere le nostre idee aprendo un spazio immaginario di consapevolezza del mondo.

Con una nuova serie di lavori in ceramica e un corpo unico di opere pittoriche, Benedikt Hipp continua il suo percorso alla ricerca di un percorso di autodeterminazione. Non a caso, uno dei termini preferiti dall’artista nelle varie conversazioni da lui tenute è, di nuovo, una parola greca: Autopoiesis, la capacità di un sistema e un organismo di trasformarsi ma di mantenere allo stesso tempo la propria unità in relazione a sé stessi e agli elementi che ci circondano.
Questa continua ricerca di sistemi emergenti è alla base della costruzione concettuale ed estetica dell’intero lavoro di Hipp.)

Per dirla con Luisa Seipp: È difficile incasellare Benedikt Hipp. Non è necessariamente uno scultore, non un surrealista, non un pittore astratto o figurativo, non un disegnatore, non un artista concettuale, eppure è tutto allo stesso tempo e molto di più. […] Hipp ci aiuta a pensare al di fuori delle categorie esistenti. Vuole che creiamo sistemi che funzionino diversamente e crescano oltre i rigidi ordini esistenti, per creare nuove fisionomie, il volto di un nuovo sistema sociale – un nuovo volto umano. Six years after his show at Monitor’s headquarters in Rome, Benedikt Hipp returns to the gallery with MAGMA, his third solo show at the gallery, opening at Monitor’s San Lorenzo space on 2 December. In 2020-2021, the German artist was a fellow at the German Academy’s Villa Massimo, further strengthening his ties to the city of Rome

“Magma (μάγμα mágma, thick unguent) is a Greek word that everyone knows. It means complex system of molten rock.

Magma or molten rock has a temperature between 1000°-1300°C, the same temperature I work with in the furnace – the temperature range in which matter begins to melt.
It’s fusion or the liquid state in which borders begin to fade and become something else. A systemic transformation that elicits the creation of new orders, organisations, emerging essences. With this work I would like to invite us to expand our ideas, opening an imaginary space for the consciousness of the world.

With a new series of works in ceramics and a body of paintings, Benedikt Hipp continues his quest for a path to self-determination. It’s no surprise, then, that during various conversations with the artist, one of his favourite words that crops up is Greek: autopoiesis or the capacity of a system or organism to transform while maintaining at the same time its own parts in relation to itself and the elements that surround it. This constant investigation into emerging systems is at the basis of the conceptual and aesthetic structure characterising Hipp’s practice.

To quote Luisa Seipp: It is difficult to pigeonhole Benedikt Hipp. He is not necessarily a sculptor, not a surrealist, not an abstract or figurative painter, not a draftsman, not a conceptual artist, and yet he is everything at once and so much more. […] Hipp helps us to overcome them and to think outside existing categories. He wants us to create systems that function differently and grow beyond the existing rigid orders, to create new physiognomies, the face of a new social system – a new human face.
